The Rotary Club of Enfield is honoring Enfield’s veterans by sponsoring military tribute banners that will be displayed in Higgins Park, the Town Green, Freshwater Walkway, North Main Street and Hazardville between Memorial Day and Veterans Day in 2026 and 2027. The Enfield Public Library partnered with Enfield Rotary to preserve digital versions of these banners as well as biographical information about each veteran.

My mother, Josephine Piorek Sarna, lived in Thompsonville her entire life. She was the daughter of Polish immigrants. She wanted to serve her Country and enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 11, 1943. Her older brother Stanley and her younger brother Irving also enlisted and were World War II U.S. Navy Veterans.

She was honorably discharged on November 14, 1945. She was a Court Stenographer in the Army who served in England and Florida. During her time in the Army, she received the American Service Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the WAAC Service Ribbon, the European American Middle Eastern Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. She was extremely proud of her service and spoke of it often. She passed away on July 1, 1985 and would be thrilled to know her photo will be posted in her home town.
