world war ii
Staff Sergeant
Bronse star
purple heart
silver star
Charles Ragno Sr. entered the European theater on D-Day (Omaha Beach) with the 2nd Infantry Division, 9th Regiment. His regiment engaged the German Army as it moved through the Northern French towns and the dense hedgerows that covered the landscape. Sergeant Ragno was a squad leader in Company G and was awarded the Bronze Star for gallantry in action in Saint Lo. He was wounded in their advance east by small arms fire and was bestowed the Purple Heart. The 9th Regiment saw action in St. Vith, Bastogne and the Wahlerscheid Crossroads. It was in that campaign that Sergeant Ragno earned his Silver Star by stopping a Tiger tank that was approaching their position and eliminating the crew. The last action that the 9th regiment was involved with was the capture of Leipzig and moving into Pilsen in Czechoslovakia. A true American hero!
