Senior Master Sergeant James "Jim" Maloney enlisted in the United States Air Force on October 29, 1974. After basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, he went on to train as a Fuels Specialist — a career that would take him across the country, to remote Alaskan outposts, and ultimately to a headquarters command role spanning 25 years.

His first duty assignment was at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, where he completed technical training and worked as a vehicle refueling operator, fuels lab technician, and fuels control center dispatcher. It was also at Luke where he met his future wife, Gail. The two married and went on to raise three daughters — Erin, Heather, and Stephanie — as the family followed Jim through the many chapters of his Air Force career.

From Luke, Jim transferred to Pease Air Force Base in New Hampshire, rising to NCOIC of the Fuels Lab. He then headed to Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska, where he took on progressively senior roles including NCOIC of the Fuels Center and NCOIC of Fuels Accounting and Administration. At Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois, Jim shifted into education, serving as instructor, shift supervisor, course NCOIC, and Course Supervisor across the Basic Fuels Specialist and Cryogenic and Production courses.

Later assignments brought him to Shemya Air Force Base in Alaska as Fuels Superintendent, Dover Air Force Base in Delaware as Fuels Operations Superintendent and Fuels Superintendent, and finally to Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, where he served at Air Mobility Command headquarters as the Command Fuels Plans and Program Manager.

Jim retired from the Air Force on October 31, 1999, with 25 years of service and decorations including five Meritorious Service Medals and two Air Force Commendation Medals. The family settled in Enfield, where Gail taught sixth grade in the Enfield Public School district. Jim later retired from federal civil service on November 30, 2021.
