The Rotary Club of Enfield is honoring Enfield’s veterans by sponsoring military tribute banners that will be displayed in Higgins Park, the Town Green, Freshwater Walkway, North Main Street and Hazardville between Memorial Day and Veterans Day in 2026 and 2027. The Enfield Public Library partnered with Enfield Rotary to preserve digital versions of these banners as well as biographical information about each veteran.

Robert Lewis Grunert honorably served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1954. He completed basic training at Fort Dix, NJ, and was subsequently deployed to Korea during the Korean War. During his service, he was a member of the 76th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion.

In recognition of his service, he was awarded the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.

He was raised in Greenwich, CT, and in 1961 married Jill Rogers. Together they built a family and shared many years of community involvement.

Bob was employed by Aetna in Hartford, CT, where he served as an Equipment Technician Supervisor for 15 years. In 1981, he established his own business, Connecticut Valley Typewriter, reflecting both his technical expertise and entrepreneurial spirit.

He was deeply involved in his community and professional organizations. He was a past member of the Enfield Jaycees, served as President of the Holy Name Society at St. Martha’s Church, and was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 50. Professionally, he served as President of NOMDA. In addition, he contributed to civic life as a member of the Democratic Town Committee and the town Wetlands Commission.

Bob was the proud father of three children, grandfather of three, and great-grandfather of one.

He passed away in February 2017.
