The Rotary Club of Enfield is honoring Enfield’s veterans by sponsoring military tribute banners that will be displayed in Higgins Park, the Town Green, Freshwater Walkway, North Main Street and Hazardville between Memorial Day and Veterans Day in 2026 and 2027. The Enfield Public Library partnered with Enfield Rotary to preserve digital versions of these banners as well as biographical information about each veteran.

World War II

second lieutenant

My father was the last of twelve children. He was the last of six boys. They lived on Pearl Street near the library. Five of the six boys went to Brown University and the sixth went to Boston College. Everyone had to work for a year prior to going to college. My father was class valedictorian and won the RPI Medal for math and science at Enfield High School. My father’s oldest brother, Harold, was a World War I veteran. Education was a priority with my father’s father Ted, who only had a 9th grade education. He was Police Chief in Enfield and later, West Springfield. He later became mayor of Enfield.  My father was drafted in 1942, a month after getting married. He served until 1946, being discharged as a captain. We moved to Berlin in 1948, when he was promoted by Connecticut Light and Power. He retired as Vice President of Sales for Northeast Utilities.
