Eclipses, Messier Objects and More with Geoff McLean

Join Geoff McLean NASA Solar System Ambassador for a look at Eclipses, Messier Objects and More.

Messier objects are 110 bright deep sky objects catalogued by the French astronomer Charles Messier in the 18th century. These objects can be seen in binoculars and amateur telescopes. All are visible from the northern hemisphere in late March and early April. A Messier Marathon is the attempt to see all 110 objects in a single evening.

Geoff will also share information about Solar Eclipses, how they happen, and some brief historical looks at previous eclipses. He will also go over safety precautions to take and the safe use of binoculars and telescopes.

Attendees will receive one pair of Eclipse Glasses after the event.

Geoff graduated from Miami University with a Bachelor of Science. He has always been a space dreamer and advocate not just for the adventure but for the knowledge and technological challenge. Upon graduation he was a US Naval Officer and served in various capacities for nine years. When his daughter was young she was awarded a 5-day/4 night stay at Goddard Space Center with Girl Scouts USA (he was extremely jealous). Afterwards they formed the Eastern CT Girl Scout Astronomy Club which he still runs today. Tens of thousands of people have looked through his four telescopes at the sun. moon, planets and deep sky objects and listened and learned from his various presentations. He speaks on a wide variety of science topics including Black Holes and Other Absurdities of our Universe, Light Pollution, Pluto (the flyby information we've learned), and many others.
